Visual line of sight (VLOS)

How far can I fly a drone in Sweden while keeping it in visual line of sight, and what the rules say about visual observers.

How far can I fly while maintaining VLOS?

Depends on aircraft size and visibility

European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) publishes a method for working this out. The requirement to fly within visual line of sight is itself binding; it is this way of calculating a practical distance that comes from acceptable means of compliance / guidance material, so the result is not a statutory maximum in itself.

acceptable means of compliance / guidance materialinherited framework (EU / EASA)

The distance depends on the aircraft's characteristic dimension and the ground visibility at the site.

  • ALOSmax = 327 x CD + 20 m
  • ALOSmax = 490 x CD + 30 m
  • DLOSmax = 0.3 x ground visibility

Authority worked examples: 1 m (rotary wing) - 347 m; 1 m (fixed wing) - 520 m; 2 m (rotary wing) - 674 m; 2 m (fixed wing) - 1010 m; 3 m (rotary wing) - 1000 m; 3 m (fixed wing) - 1500 m; 3.5 m (rotary wing) - 1164.5 m; 3.5 m (fixed wing) - 1500 m; 4 m (rotary wing) - 1328 m; 4 m (fixed wing) - 1500 m; 4.53 m (rotary wing) - 1500 m; 4.53 m (fixed wing) - 1500 m

VLOS required
VLOS is determined by whether the remote pilot can keep the unmanned aircraft in unaided visual contact. EASA guidance treats the maximum possible VLOS distance as the smaller of the attitude line of sight (ALOS) and the detection line of sight (DLOS); anything beyond that is BVLOS.acceptable means of compliance / guidance materialEuropean Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
Visual observers
An observer may assist the remote pilot, but the remote pilot remains responsible for maintaining visual line of sight and the operating range is not extended.acceptable means of compliance / guidance materialinherited framework (EU / EASA)
FPV flight
UA observers may also be used when the remote pilot conducts UAS operations in first-person view (FPV). In any case, including during FPV operations, the remote pilot is still responsible for the safety of the flight.
  • The remote pilot remains responsible for the safety of the flight at all times.
  • A UA observer may be used and must be situated alongside the remote pilot.
The official sources reviewed for this jurisdiction do not settle whether an observer is legally required during FPV flight.acceptable means of compliance / guidance material
Visibility
Visibility is part of the published method: DLOSmax = 0.3 x ground visibility

Drone Regulation Index 2026

How Sweden reads across the four measured pillars.

Established

79.4

of 100

A higher score never means less regulated. It means the rules, as published, are more proportionate, more navigable and more reachable for an operator who intends to comply.

This score sits close to a tier edge — closer to it than to the middle of its own tier — so the tier itself is inside the model's uncertainty.

Jointly placed with Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Poland — these results are treated as the same outcome. Scores inside the equivalence window are treated as the same result. The window is the largest movement any market's score shows across plausible alternative pillar weightings, so any smaller difference sits inside the model's own uncertainty.

Where the framework constrains operators

Administrative components

Reported, never scored. These describe how the administrative machinery is built rather than how much process it imposes.

Advanced operations components

Reported, never scored. These record the shape of an advanced-operations route where it exists, without judging how open it is.

  • Repeat or generic permissionreportedrepeat/generic permission present

Digital infrastructure

Reported, never scored. Digital services differ in maturity in ways that reflect a market's investment programme rather than the legal position an operator faces, so they inform the picture without moving any score.

Data confidence

High confidence (88.3/100)

Most measures resolved from published facts, predominantly on a binding legal basis, from a fully servable corpus.

  • Measures resolved: 95.2%
  • Corpus publicly servable: 100.0%

20 of 21 measures resolved (95.2% of those applicable). Unresolved means our corpus does not currently express the rule in a machine-resolvable way. It is a statement about our data, never a finding that the activity is permitted or prohibited.

  • EFF-04 Night operation access — night operations do not resolve

Every measured statement links to the regulatory provision it was derived from. Where a citation names a parent-framework instrument, that instrument applies directly in the market shown.

This is not a league table. Markets are grouped into tiers and listed alphabetically inside each tier; we publish no position, no ordering within a tier and no country-versus-country winner.

The Index is a comparison of regulatory frameworks, not legal advice and not an operational clearance. Always confirm the current rule with the responsible authority before flying.
