Statutory remote-pilot training duty and its aeromodelling club exemption

French law requires every remote pilot to have completed training to control the aircraft safely. The duty does not apply to use inside an aeromodelling club or association where the aircraft is lighter than a threshold set by regulation — the law caps that threshold at 800 g, but the operative figure is set separately by regulation, not by this article. The EU competency rules apply in addition.

Requirement as structured

Every remote pilot must have completed training enabling the safe control of the unmanned aircraft in compliance with the rules and conditions of use relating to air navigation. This statutory obligation does not apply to the use of unmanned aircraft within aeromodelling clubs and associations within the meaning of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 where the aircraft mass is below a threshold fixed by regulation; that regulatory threshold cannot by law exceed 800 grammes. The objectives and modalities of the training, the verification of its assimilation and the recognition of equivalent training are specified by regulation.

Tout télépilote doit avoir suivi une formation visant à permettre le contrôle de l'évolution des aéronefs circulant sans équipage à bord, en sécurité et dans le respect des règles et des conditions d'emploi relatives à la navigation aérienne. Cette obligation n'est pas applicable à l'utilisation d'aéronefs circulant sans équipage à bord au sein de clubs et associations d'aéromodélisme au sens du règlement d'exécution (UE) 2019/947 de la Commission du 24 mai 2019 concernant les règles et procédures applicables à l'exploitation d'aéronefs sans équipage à bord, lorsque leur masse est inférieure à un seuil fixé par voie réglementaire. Ce seuil ne peut être supérieur à 800 grammes.
