# Drone laws in United Kingdom

> Structured, citation-backed drone regulation information for United Kingdom, published by Drone Assistant from official sources. Every claim below links to the official material it came from. This is not legal advice, coverage is not exhaustive, and the linked official source governs.

> Limited guide. Drone Assistant's coverage of United Kingdom is still under review, so this page summarises only the published rules we can cite to an official source. It is not a complete statement of United Kingdom's drone law; check the linked sources or ask the assistant about your own flight.

## Regulatory framework

- Jurisdiction: United Kingdom
- Responsible aviation authority: [UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA)](https://www.caa.co.uk/drones/)
- Framework type: standalone national framework
- Published rules held for this jurisdiction: 181

United Kingdom operates a standalone national framework: the rules below are set nationally.

Legal status is stated for every rule below: binding law, AMC/GM (acceptable means of compliance and guidance material), authority guidance or other non-binding material. Guidance is never a statutory maximum in itself.

## Registration and pilot requirements

## Visual line of sight (VLOS)

Requirement (binding law, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)): UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947 Article 2(7): a VLOS operation is one in which the remote pilot is able to maintain continuous unaided visual contact with the unmanned aircraft, allowing the remote pilot to control the flight path in relation to other aircraft, people and obstacles for the purpose of avoiding collisions. UAS.OPEN.060(2)(b) requires the remote pilot to keep the aircraft in VLOS and maintain a thorough visual scan of the surrounding airspace.

- Distance: No fixed VLOS distance
- What that means: No fixed VLOS distance is prescribed. You must remain close enough to maintain the visual contact required by the applicable rule.

- Visual observer: An observer may assist the remote pilot, but the remote pilot remains responsible for maintaining visual line of sight and the operating range is not extended.
  - Legal status: binding law (national)
- First-person view (FPV): FPV flight is permitted only with a competent observer who maintains direct unaided visual contact with the aircraft. (binding law)
  - GM1 UAS.OPEN.060(4): a UA observer must be situated alongside the remote pilot and may not use aided vision other than corrective spectacles or contact lenses.
  - CAA General Exemption ORS4 No. 1294 (E 4853) permits FPV flight only where a competent observer maintains direct unaided visual contact, MTOM does not exceed 3.5 kg, height does not exceed 400 ft, and the stated separation distances are observed.

Layers that apply:

- National (united-kingdom), binding law, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA): UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947 Article 2(7): a VLOS operation is one in which the remote pilot is able to maintain continuous unaided visual contact with the unmanned aircraft, allowing the remote pilot to control the flight path in relation to other aircraft, people and obstacles for the purpose of avoiding collisions. UAS.OPEN.060(2)(b) requires the remote pilot to keep the aircraft in VLOS and maintain a thorough visual scan of the surrounding airspace.
  - Method: The CAA publishes no numeric VLOS distance. GM1 Article 2(7) states the achievable distance depends on the eyesight of the remote pilot, the size and visual conspicuity of the aircraft, weather, terrain and whether the flight is by day or night, and that it will vary on each flight.
